The Challenge

Cyberkar sought a partner with proven expertise in designing mission-ready HMIs for specialized vehicle environments. For its Kommander HVAC Control system, the interface needed to support seamless operation in high-pressure scenarios typical of law enforcement vehicles. Key design requirements included:

  • Ergonomic Integration: The controls had to be easily accessible without distracting the driver or interfering with other critical systems. The interface needed to support gloved operation through responsive capacitive touch or tactile feedback.
  • Multi-System Coordination: The HMI had to integrate smoothly with other vehicle systems such as sirens, radios, and lighting controls. It was essential to avoid latency or functional conflicts when switching between systems.
  • Environmental Robustness: The interface needed to perform reliably under extreme conditions, including temperature fluctuations, constant vibration, and heavy usage typical of patrol vehicles.
  • Intuitive Usability: The layout had to minimize cognitive load during high-stress situations. A clear visual hierarchy and shallow menu structure were critical for fast, instinctive adjustments — ideally without requiring visual confirmation.
  • Vehicle Compatibility: The system had to adapt to various OEM dashboards (Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet) while maintaining consistent functionality, safety standards, and user experience across platforms.

The control unit features a multi-material assembly including polycarbonate+ABS housings and tactile push buttons with transparent centers, optimized for gloved interaction. Rotary dials and silicone rubber membranes provide precise control and haptic feedback, while maintaining a clean, sealed surface for hygiene and durability.

Advanced Touch and Feedback Technologies

All touch elements are engineered for responsiveness under gloved or wet-hand conditions. Backlit symbols and rotary switch centers offer clear visual feedback, while tactile switches and rotary encoders ensure reliable mechanical response in high-stress scenarios.

Environmental and System Resilience

Designed to withstand extreme temperatures, vibration, and frequent use, the unit includes a DLC display, RoHS-compliant components, and protective polyurethane coatings. The interface maintains consistent performance across OEM dashboards (Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet), ensuring broad compatibility and safety compliance.

Seamless Multi-System Integration
